Choosing the Right Mah Jongg Set

How to purchase the right Mah Jongg set for you.  Always keep in mind a Mah Jongg set is an investment.  It is something you will have for many years.  It is long lasting.  You most likely will not change your set out like a deck of cards.  Many sets are passed down from generation to generation.  I recommend buying a set that you love and will cherish.  

There are many to choose from, at all different price points.  You can spend $60 to $90,000 on a complete set.  As well as all different types.  There are Asian sets and American sets.  

Let's narrow down your options.  First decide if you will need an Asian set or an American set.  How do you choose?  American sets come with more tiles.  If you are ever in doubt by an American set.  American sets have the most tiles, you can always take away from a set to change the version you are playing.  If you play multiple versions and only want one set than an American version will be good. American sets also have the numbers and letters on the tiles.  If you know you will be playing an Asian version and you don't need the numbers and letters on the tiles than an Asian version will work for you.

An American game you will need 152 tiles:

4 of each Bams numbers 1 thru 9

4 of each Cracks numbers 1 thru 9

4 of each Dots numbers 1 thru 9

4 Red Dragons, 4 Green Dragons, 4 Soaps / White Dragons

8 Jokers and 8 Flowers

Most modern American sets come with 160 tiles that can be a combination of blank tiles, extra flowers and/or extra jokers so you have extra incase you loose or damage a tile.

An Asian game you will need 144 tiles:

4 of each Bams numbers 1 thru 9

4 of each Cracks numbers 1 thru 9

4 of each Dots numbers 1 thru 9

4 Red Dragons, 4 Green Dragons, 4 Soaps / White Dragons

8 Flowers

Modern Asian Sets may come with a few extra blanks or flowers so you have extra incase you loose or damage a tile.
